Fear, Ego, Work And Your Life Purpose : By Bhavna Gupta

Create a goal or vision in life that includes others and is much bigger than yourself

By Bhavna Gupta

In every person’s journey to the path of success, many may find themselves living as loners. Some may live with a lot of fear and focus on the ego, which is the “I” factored. There is a small voice inside which constantly chatters – talking about desires, what others have and what you have not gotten; what others are saying about you. It starts almost instantly once you reach your workplace, and in the company of other people. When you walk into the office, it starts off with: What is he/she thinking about how I am dressed? Why did my colleague not smile at me? Why did my boss not call me before my colleague? Why did my subordinate not wish me “good morning”?

Whatever the internal chatter may be, it mostly revolves around worries and fears, and that is your ego working against you. It wants constant attention; it wants to stand above all others or see others as smaller than you.

Not only does the ego increase your stress and reduce your output, it also leads you to develop negative ways of making yourself feel good by way of vices, unhealthy pursuits, shopping addiction and overeating – all of which create a false sense of security.

So more than being constructive, it is destructive and makes success just an illusion. The ego drives you on a compulsive obsession, which becomes nothing but a disease.

So how to do you “cure” your ego? One way is to create a goal or a purpose in life which is way above yourself – a vision that is much bigger than yourself (includes others or the society at large). Examples include engaging in charity work, getting involved in community activities, or doing something (walk, run, swim, etc.) for a cause. Then your ego can take a backseat. You learn to shrug off what others think of you. You feel connected to your workplace, with your colleagues, and there is a flow of harmony and purpose to help you reach success.

Handy Hints

  • Ego increases stress, reduces output, makes success an illusion?
  • Worries, fears involve the ego which needs constant attention?
  • Letting the ego take a backseat creates harmony in life as a whole
